(FAIRHOPE, Ala. ) June 7 - Swimming advisories remain in effect for parts of Mobile Bay due to high levels of Enterococcous Bacteria. That's animal waste in the water. Water samples were taken at the Fairhope Beach on Thursday and Friday and the State Department of Environmental Management is saying bacteria levels are now four times above the safe level for swimming. State officials are now stepping up sampling of waters to at least once a week from now until Labor Day. People on the beach chose not to get in after seeing the advisory notice. "We read it for a little bit and you know its all about the drainage and stuff coming down i wish there was a way they could keep it from coming down this far but i guess they cant," says Eddie jerkins who was at the Fairhope Beach with his two children today. Alba Beach at Dog River is also listed in the red danger zone. Swimming in the ocean and in bay waters is a safe thing to do, however there are precautions you can take. According to research done at the University of Miami bacteria is always in the water. First stay out of the water if advisories are posted at the beach. Shower before and after you swim, and if you cut yourself, stay out of the water. For more information and a link to the study go to our webchannel at NBC15 online dot com.
