(BIRMINGHAM, Ala.) (AP) June 19 - Trustees for Auburn University and the University of Alabama System have approved tuition increases for next school year.
Tuition for the fall semester will go up 9.4 percent at the University of Alabama and it will rise 5.7 percent at Auburn.
UA System Chancellor Malcolm Portera said the increase was necessary to make up for state budget cuts. The increase brings the cost of tuition for a semester at the University of Alabama to $3,500. A semester at the University of Alabama at Birmingham will cost $3,148, and a semester at the University of Alabama in Huntsville will cost $3,255.
Tuition at Auburn increases by $186, bringing the cost to $3,120, not including fees, for in-state students taking 10 to 15 hours.
Auburn University at Montgomery tuition will increase six percent to $2,820 per semester for in-state students.
