(ELBERTA, Ala.) - The Baldwin County Sheriff's Office is investigating a report by the Elberta Police Chief that someone shot at him outside the police station Sunday night.

Chief Mickey Pledger says he was getting a file from his police car when he saw someone in the backyard area of the police station with their back to him. He says when he asked the man what he was doing, he turned around and fired a shot.

Pledger says the shot shattered his office window. He says he ran after the shooter, toward the front of the building, crouching in the bushes. There, Pledger says he lost his footing, scraping his head and dislocating his shoulder. Pledger says he was still able to fire one shot at the man, but the shooter got away.

This is the second time in less than a year Pledger says someone has tried to kill him. In April 2010, he says someone threw a cinder block at the windshield of his moving patrol car.

Investigators said they thought the incident was deliberate, but they weren't sure if Pledger was the intended target in that case.

Pledger also says, when he was a federal customs agent, a man put a hit out on him, his wife and kids. And just before he took the job as Elberta's Police Chief in October 2009, he says the same man threatened him again. While he's not sure who is responsible for the latest attack, Pledger says he wants answer fast.

If anyone has information on this latest incident, they're asked to call the Baldwin County Sheriff's Office at 251-937-0202.
