BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - Thousands of jobless Alabamians who use state-issued debit cards to get their unemployment benefits will soon be getting new cards in the mail.
The Alabama Department of Industrial Relations has switched to a new card provider. Director Tom Surtees says the new debit cards will allow users to access unemployment funds at more ATMs without fees and to access their accounts and get balance notices online or by text message.
The Birmingham News reports that 40,000 people statewide use the debit cards to access their unemployment payments.
Surtees said Friday the new cards will be mailed out next week and will become active Feb. 23. Funds still on the old cards can be accessed through the end of April.
