MOBILE, Ala. (AP) - A new proposal would require defendants convicted of felonies in Alabama to serve 85 percent of their prison terms.

The Mobile Press-Register reports that the Alabama Sentencing Commission estimates adopting the proposal could increase the inmate population by as much as 40 percent in four years unless the state shortens sentences for many felonies.

The commission must present a bill to this year's state Legislature to create new sentencing guidelines designed to standardize the lengths of time that inmates serve behind bars.

Alabama's prison system holds 25,600 inmates. That's nearly twice as many inmates as it was designed to accommodate.

We need laws like some in Saudia Arabia, catch a person stealing chop off a hand, steal again off with the other one. Kill someone and you're executed in 30 days. Molest a child under the age of 18 and immediate castration, rape someone immediate castration. Caught with weed or any illegal drugs mandatory 5 years minimum, selling drugs 20 years minimum and no early release for drug charges. Carjacking and home invasions gets a life sentence. Anyone convicted of any crime including misdemeaor and possessing a gun or weapon gets 25 years minimum. All moving citations in a vehicle $150.00 maximum each, like parking, speeding, improper tag, etc. All corrupt public officials convicted while serving in office get 25 years no parole or early release. 2nd felony conviction gets twice the original sentence of first felony. Keep in mind that over 80% of all crimes committed in the United States the last 25 years can be directly or indirectly traced back to illegal drug use.

how about this: ok serve 100% of your sentence, but what about harsh sentencing a mandatory 10 years for a lie someone tells. mind you that the feds dont check their facts just some hear say. i know a guy rightnow in jail because a guys says " yea this guy sold me drugs. we're best frends. so a month later the "dealer" walks right past the "best friend" and he did not recognize the other. if this man was your bestie would"nt you recognize him? and that ladies and gentleman is our conspiracy law 10yrs mandatory. responsible for over half the overcrowding. i agree with thomas fraud, bad checks, people in jail due to inadequate informants, lol should be released. leave the killers, rapist etc

Whats wrong with serving 100% of your sentence?

Try this: Anyone in prison who has not deprived another person of their life, liberty, or property through force or fraud, should be RELEASED. A "crime" that only harms the "perpetrator" is NOT a real crime.

Here's an idea, how about they serve 100% of their sentence. As for the overcrowding, why not a barbed wire encampment and tents. Kind'a like what you can be expected to live in as an Military Grunt! Prisoners could actually be responsible for building the encampment to further reduce costs and a small mine field surrounding "prison" should be sufficient 24 hour security and reduce the number of guards needed.
