MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - The Alabama Legislature is preparing to enter its second regular session since Republicans took control in 2010 for the first time in more than a century.
Speaker Mike Hubbard of Auburn and Lt. Gov. Kay Ivey will gavel the House and Senate into session at noon Tuesday. Lawmakers will meet for 30 meeting days in 105 calendar days.
One of the toughest tasks facing lawmakers is balancing the state's two operating budgets. Particularly troublesome is the General Fund budget, which funds most non-education services like
prisons, state troopers and Medicaid. General Fund budget committee chairman Jim Barton said the spending plan will have about $400 million less revenue available than was in last year's $1.8 billion budget.
Lawmakers are also expected to attempt making some changes to the immigration law.
