MOBILE, Ala. (WPMI) A House Representative says he doesn't know enough about an educational teaching standard called "Common Core," and has introduced a bill to make sure it doesn't reach your child's classroom before he and other law makers give it their stamp of approval.
Common Core is collection of teaching standards for K through 12 schools in America, and has been adopted by 45 states, the District of Columbia, even the Department of Defense.
The idea is to create a student in the U.S. that is more competitive world wide.
But Jim Barton, a House Representative from Mobile, fears it, and says he and fellow lawmakers don't know enough about it... even though the Alabama State School Board adopted Common Core three years ago.
His bill would give law makers in Montgomery final say over keeping the Common Core standards in Alabama's public school classrooms.
"I think our State Board of Education is qualified to do it, I want to make sure that they actually realize what they signed up for," said Barton. "Because, quite frankly, I'm not certain that they know or that we know what they've signed up for when they signed up for the Common Core. Again, if it is in fact the federal government reaching into the classroom and dictating what the curriculum is, I'm not going to be for that."
Supporters of Common Core say the criticism is just anti-Washington posturing.
