(DAPHNE, Ala.) June 12 - Construction started this week on the widening of Highway 181. The road will be widened to four lanes from Highway 90 to Milton Jones Road.

The Alabama Department of Transportation says this is the first phase of the project. Eventually, Highway 181 will be four lanes from Highway 90 to Highway 98, and the completed project will make Highway 181 a more effective hurricane evacuation route.

The first phase will take until the end of next year to complete. ALDOT says the project will move slowly because there are a lot of utility lines that have to be moved.

ALDOT says peak times are 6 A.M. to 9 A.M. and 4 P.M. to 6 P.M.
