AG Files Lawsuit Against Poarch Band of Creek Indians

ATMORE, Ala. (WPMI) Alabama Attorney General Luther Strange has filed suit against the Poarch Band of Creek Indians to close their casinos in Atmore, Montgomery and Wetumpka.

The lawsuit was filed while Alabama State Troopers served a search warrant aimed at closing the VictoryLand casino in Macon County. Strange said in a release that VictoryLand is operating in "open defiance" of laws against gambling.

This is the latest in a long-running effort by the state to shut down what it calls illegal gaming operations.

Both the Poarch Band of Creek Indians and VictoryLand operators say their machines are legal.

Time and time again federal courts have made clear that states have NO, NADA, ZERO, authority over Tribal lands. Not only is this a complete waste of taxpayer money, but shutting down the Poarch Indian casinos would cost thousands of jobs and wreck local economies in a state that is already one of the poorest in the nation. Obviously, this is not much concern to Mr. Strange. Like many Attorney Generals, he is only looking to make a name for himself, regardless of destruction left in his wake.
