(MOBILE, Ala.) - A 6th grader will be charged after investigators say he passed out prescription drugs to his classmates at Semmes Middle School. Investigators at the Mobile County Sheriff's Office say the 6th grader went through his mother's purse, found Xanax and Lortab, then handed it out to his classmates.

Popping pills in P.E.-- that's what 6th grader Kalin Gross says one of his friends did Tuesday. "Took about 8 drug pills," Gross said.

Investigators confirm two boys overdosed on Xanax and Lortab. Students say the 6th graders passed out. Steven Miller was walking into the gym when he saw them.

"The two kids were on the ground," Miller said. "I thought they were having seizures. I wasn't sure. The janitors were pushing people back trying to keep them away. I was scared for the kids."

The two boys were rushed to the hospital, treated and later released. Now, Mobile County Sheriff's Office Major Chad Tucker says investigators are looking into the possibility more students may have taken the drugs.

"This could be a very serious drug case," Tucker said.

Classmates say their teachers talked to them about what happened, but parents say they were left in the dark. James Gross has two kids at the school.

"They should at least tell the parents about it," Gross said.

A spokesperson for the school system would not say much, but says the student who passed out the pills has been suspended. Investigators say the 6th grader will face criminal charges.

"There are 2 issues here," Tucker said. "One, it can be very illegal. The second thing is, it can be very dangerous. Those types of medications are supposed to be taken under the guidance of a doctor, not of a classmate."

This is what happens when kids get ideas from TV and the media about drugs. This can be blamed on too much reporting and too much information. Thanks to this new information "highway", young kids that otherwise would have zero interest in seeking such information find themselves prematurely discovering ways to get "high". Call it premature peer presure and blame these kind of incidents on the unknowing parent. In today's world, parents and adults are being "blind sided" as they see kids younger and younger being confronted with these kind of temptations.

Yes it is a tradegy. But I blame television as well as what people put in print. Its NOT always the parents fault. Parents can NOT control their children 24/7. And besides, He did take the pills out of his mother's purse, And like the story said, The parents at the school were left in the dark. I am sure the last thing the mother would think her son would do is take her meds and give them to his friends. Especially at school. As far as how to charge this child, I do not believe that he should be tried as an adult for this matter.

This isn't the first time something has happened at that school and the parents are left in the dark. The school system claims it is to protect the rights of the student that is in the wrong! Did not understand it then, do not understand it now!!!

This is happening in all schools.... 6, 7 & 8th grade are the worst. It does not matter where you are or who you are - your kids are around this. A 6th grader at my childs school was found selling Lortabs. Best advice is to teach your kids the dangers of this and hope they are listening. Chances are this boy who brought them was looking for peer acceptance - the boys who took them wanted to look cool..... Sad

Just kids doing kid stuff. It's Nature's way of thinning the herd.

The Question is where did a 6th grader get the pills? The parents must have them at home and not keeping up with the count of them. My husband has alot of meds and myself or him count every other day to make sure that there isn't any missing. Is the parents going to be charged too?
