(MOBILE, Ala.) With Thanksgiving Day exactly three weeks away, the Salvation Army of Mobile is asking for help to feed the less fortunate.
Every year the Salvation Army prepares a Thanksgiving dinner for the needy. Last year workers and volunteers served around 800 dinners.
"We always prepare for over a thousand people whether we get them or not," Chef Cecil Morris Jr. said. "The meal here is second to none to any restaurant."
Morris said this is his 18th Thanksgiving cooking for the Salvation Army, but this year, he said, supplies are at a premium.
"Things are not as plentiful as they used to be," Morris said. "We're finding that we're servicing more people in the community, the homeless community, just people that don't have the opportunity or they don't have the means to feed themselves."
Morris said they average at least 80 more plates every day this year.
"A lot of the responsibility is in the kitchen, but we couldn't do it without the community's support," Salvation Army Mobile Public Relations Director Katie Emer said. "We need those donations of that food to make it all possible."
Emer said those delicious turkey dinners are much more than just another meal on a holiday.
"Whether it's a homeless person, a family in need or someone without family who just needs somewhere to go for Thanksgiving," Emer said.
"We'd be dead-dog tired in the end," Morris said, "but it's worth it when I see somebody rub their stomach. I promise you."
