Mobile City Leaders Debate the Future of the Civic Center

Should it be torn to the ground, or is it a vital asset to the community. The Mobile Civic Center has been a staple in the Port City since the early 60s. But, according to some leaders, the aging facility is costing the city more than half a million dollars just for utilities alone. Is it worth it? LOCAL 15’s Trish Williford investigates.

I can't argue with the prior comment except I believe the opening of the Casinos along the MS coast and the Pensacola Civic Center doomed the Mobile facility. I will also say this, the facility is old and obsolete but should be brought up to standards until it can be replaced with a modern arena and performing arts facility. I don't often agree with Sam but in this case I do...the City needs to maintain the facility which I consider to be part of the infrastructure and quality of life aspects of Mobile.I do believe the city and/or facility management could a much better job promoting/managing the facility. The city will never make money on it but the loses could be reduced. In the meantime, the city should start design work on a new 18-20 thousand arena and a 2500 seat Concert/performing arts hall...Ladd stadium is in dire need of replacement also if Mobile is to become a "world class city" that Sam says and we all know it could become!

If it hadn't been for the greed and graft of past civic center management, we'd still be seeing concerts on the scale of Ted Nugent, Led Zepplin, and Elvis at the civic center. Age and lack of maintenence has made Mobile a less appealing venue for such musical acts. Yeah, those were the good old days.
