SPANISH FORT, Ala. (WPMI)  The Causeway is reopen after an 18-wheeler overturned, shutting down the road for hours.

Authorities and witnesses say an 18-wheeler overturned when attempting to avoid a head on collision with a small silver SUV headed the wrong way.

It happened around 2:30 p.m. Monday.

Spanish Fort officials say the 18-wheeler veered as far as it could go on the road, and eventually got stopped on the median.

The large truck then tipped over, officials say it's due to the weight of the vehicle's load and the water saturated ground.

Spanish Fort PD, Spanish Fort Fire Department and ALDOT helped clear the scene.

Officials say the Causeway should be reopened by 7 p.m.
