(MOBILE, Ala.) July 2 - A suspect is recovering at USA Medical Center after police say a routine traffic stop escalated and ended with an officer firing upon the suspect.

Ofc. Charles Levy says a Mobile police officer pulled a driver into the parking lot of the Raceway Gas Station at the intersection of Government Boulevard and McVay Drive at approximately 2 P.M. Thursday.

Levy says when the MPD officer was confirming the identity of the driver, the driver ran from into the woods behind the gas station and was pursued on foot by the MPD officer, who made an unsuccessful attempt to taser the suspect. Levy says the suspect then attempted to turn the officer's own taser on him, forcing the officer to shot the suspect.

Officials say the officer suffered minor injuries.

There is no word on the condition of the suspect.
