(PRICHARD, Ala.) - One man is dead after an officer involved shooting early Tuesday morning at a gas station in Prichard.

Police the suspect in the incident was pronounced dead at USA Medical Center. Neither the name of the suspect nor the Prichard Police Officer involved in the shooting were released.

Prichard Police Chief Jimmie Gardner said the officer has been placed on administrative leave while the department completes an internal investigation.

It happened at the Citgo Gas Station on Martin Luther King Junior Drive around one o'clock Tuesday morning. Gas station owner Omar Toor told Local 15 News an intoxicated man walked into the gas station, started acting disorderly and pulled out a gun.

Toor said that is when the on-duty store clerk called police.

"Police came in, and that guy was killed," Toor said. "His hand was in his pocket, and he was not pulling his hand out of his pocket."

Police said the officer shot the man just outside of the gas station doors.

"It's unfortunate that the suspect that's involved is dead," Chief Gardner said.

Gardner said his officers have to make decisions often on a moment's notice.

"Unfortunately, tonight, it resulted in the suspect being killed."

Omar Toor said police told the man to get on the ground several times.

"He just kept walking toward officer," Toor said. "So officer had to, had to shot him."

Toor said his employee was not harmed during the incident

"She has a big heart, so she's doing good," Toor said.
