(MOBILE, Ala.) Oct. 26 - Authorities have issued an arrest warrant for the 17-year old driver involved in the crash that sent a pregnant woman to the emergency room for an early delivery.
The wreck happened Saturday afternoon on Irvington-Bayou La Batre Highway at Meadow Lane in Bayou La Batre. Alabama State Troopers say Eileen Hodges, 67, stopped her car at the intersection to make a turn.
The 17-year-old, driving a Mazda truck, failed to see Hodges stop and slammed into her vehicle, state troopers said in a news release. The impact sent Hodges' vehicle into oncoming traffic, where she was hit head on by an S-10 pickup truck.
In that pickup truck, was a woman, 8-months pregnant. She was flown to a local hospital where doctors performed emergency surgery to remove the child. Both mother and child were listed in fair condition Monday evening.
Troopers believe the 17-year old, whose name has not yet been released, was under the influence of a controlled substance. Toxicology results are pending. When the teenager is arrested, state troopers say he will be charged with several counts of assault.
