TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) - Tuscaloosa police say they suspect a man found dead in an apartment overdosed on heroin, a drug they say seems to be gaining popularity in the area.

The 28-year-old man, whose name was not immediately released, was found dead Friday.

Tuscaloosa Police Chief Steve Anderson says his officers have noticed an increase in heroin use in recent years, especially among college-age students.

Police Capt. Lloyd Baker says his investigators reported 25 confirmed drug overdoses in 2011, though many were caused by nowdrugs other than heroin. While only 15 overdoses were confirmed in Tuscaloosa County last year, Baker says toxicology results are still pending in 25 cases. He expects most of those will be ruled overdoses as well.
