OCEAN SPRINGS, Miss. (AP) - Jackson County Sheriff Mike Byrd says a truck driven by an off-duty Pascagoula policeman killed a 16-year-old Ocean Springs girl.

He says Katelyn Braun and a friend were walking in a street when she was hit Friday evening by the truck driven by Daniel Snyder, who was not arrested. She died Saturday afternoon.

Pascagoula Police Chief Kenny Johnson tells the Mississippi Press that his department has begun an internal investigation. He says he plans to meet on Monday with Sheriff's Department investigators.

The sheriff says Snyder told investigators he did not see Braun, who was wearing a red shirt and dark sweat pants. He says Snyder realized he had hit something, returned to check and discovered that he had hit a person.

Snyder could not be reached for comment.
