MOBILE, Ala. (WPMI) The Carnival Triumph was on the move Friday morning, headed across the river to a shipyard to undergo repairs.
BAE in Mobile will repair the ship. It's unclear how long it will take.
The ship docked Thursday night after 9. It took all 4,000 passengers and crew members roughly four hours to disembark.
The ship had been adrift at sea for five days after it was paralyzed by an engine fire. The long process of towing the ship into Mobile's port was watched by the entire nation.
Local 15's Darwin Singleton talked with Mayor Sam Jones. He said the whole ordeal really put our city in a good light.
"Carnival understands our capabilities as it relates to this terminal. I think they had a misconception about some of our other capabilities, as far as being able to handle charters out of here, as far as being able to house people here. And that was really a communications breakdown, because we should have talked earlier. We got real notification from them on Mardi Gras day. And we started working on that day and the terminal was ready and I think everyone agreed that the terminal worked well for them," said Jones. "Oh, we could have done a whole lot more in this situation and they realize that now."
