(MOBILE, Ala) - Just hours after putting out a house fire, Mobile firefighters were called back to the same house to do it again.

Neighbor Jeremy Mills said the sirens woke him so he went outside to see the firefighters. He and other neighbors watched and worried about what could have happened if the fire had spread.

"If it had," said neighbor Wallace Sunde, "there'd have been a lot of houses going up in flames."

After the second fire was out, fire officials investigated and say they determined that the couple living in the home set the fires.

"A witness came to us," said Mobile Fire-Rescue spokesperson Steve Huffman, "and actually gave us information to indicate that the owners of the structure were the ones who started the fire."

So Friday, fire officials arrested Richard Ferrell and Janet Champion, charging them each with two counts of second degree arson.

Huffman said that with the down economy, people are struggling to pay their mortgages, and many are setting their own homes on fire to collect insurance money.

Fire officials continue to investigate. They say the couple could face more charges.

I believe the arrest is wrong I dont believe there is a eye witness and I also think that everyone one needs to get ALL the facts before going on tv with just half the story I do believe now that you can believe everything you hear on the news.. So now I guess you guilty until proven innocent... Just a easy out for the investigators and insurance company ... Its a crime if you dont have insurance on your home and its a crime if you do...

The arson investigators will determine where and how the fire started. To arrest someone for arson based on an "eye witness" report could prove premature. House fires happen with regularity and 99.5% are caused by something other than arson. The "Eye witness" may have an issue(s) with the homeowner. Yes, I am sure the instances of arson are up over the last couple of years. However, dealing with insurance companies over an electrical fire is like a visit to the Proctologist...uncomfortable and embarrassing at best! If they can't make the payments, just abandon the house and give it back to the lender...at least you won't be in jail and still owe!
