(SEMMES, Ala.) - Madison Shelton, 3, is still in the hospital after being attacked by dogs Wednesday afternoon. Her father and grandmother are sharing the story for the first time.

Madison was playing in the front yard when three dogs jumped on the little girl and dragged her nearly 90 feet, says her Grandmother Charlotte McNutt.

"She had bites in excess of 50, 150-plus stitches and least ten bites maybe as deep as to the bone, there's a lot of swelling, pain it's just horrible," McNutt said.

The dogs --lab retriever mixes and an Australian Cattle Dog commonly known as a Blue Heeler-- belong to a neighbor.

"She can't sit up, she can't move she can't do nothing but hold her little baby doll," said Joshua Shelton, Madison's Father.

Shelton says the dogs were often seen roaming free around the neighborhood. Hee's angry, not only about what happened, but how it happened. "It's something you wouldn't wish anybody to see. My daughter has bites in places they shouldn't be. It makes me angry that somebody is not responsible enough to have their pets detained in their own yard."

The dogs are currently being held at the animal shelter and could be put down if a court concludes they're dangerous. A warrant has been issued for the owner, James White, for violating the City of Mobile's Dog Control Ordinance, which is a misdemeanor offense.

"Somebody was not responsible and now she is paying the price," McNutt said.

Hey Dog bite victims! Here is my solution, go out and buy you a 32 ounce Louisville Slugger ball bat, use said ball bat on the irresponsible neighbors knee caps and fore arms and then you put some raw meat in his pockets, round up some stray dogs and turn them loose on the neighbor. For enjoyment and entertainment purposes you might want to videotape this event so it could be used as a training video for future pet owners that don't seem to care if their pets maul babies and small children.

Debbie, Actually, Labs are one of the most frequently reported breeds to bite. However, there is no way to ID specifics of a dog's breed unless they are truly full bred. ALL BREEDS BITE. ALL BREEDS BITE. The issue is that the smaller dogs do not do as much damage. Ankle biters don't get this attention. Alabama has leash laws. They need to be enforced. Citizens should be able to file complaints and have them heard. I would expect to be held accountable if I allowed my dogs to roam. I suspect THEY Don't pick up dogs because THEY know there is nowhere to put them. And if people are so careless they allow their dogs to roam, they are not going to care to pay boarding fees, fines and keep their dogs leashed in the future. Mobile has a SERIOUS Parvo problem. Loose dogs are a danger. PERIOD! And BTW, placing your dog on a line and leaving it the yard is not doing him any good. It promotes aggression and is banned in many communities.

This is so sad. Dog owners sometimes fail to see the danger to others their dogs pose. Please keep your pets secure! The pets seem so friendly to their masters, but on the loose their instincts are from their wolf ancestors. All dogs are descended from wolves. The different breeds were created by small genetic differences and selctive breeding. For example, breeding the much smaller offspring, like the "runt" of the litter, to another runt. All the "purebreds" were all derived by breeding dogs with desired qualities to other dogs with the same traits. Indiscrimante breeding is very, very wrong. So is allowing you dog(s) to roam free.

i have a 2 year old daughter and have a neighbor that has at least 5 dogs living in the house and 5 outside in the yard. i have had to repeatedly shoo these dogs out of my yard every time they let them out to use the bathroom. I'm tired of urine spots and piles in my yard, not to mention not being able to let my daughter out in MY yard to play, worried that she will pick up a "log" (as kids are curious in this age). i have asked the neighbors to keep them in their yard and even taken certain steps to get the dogs out of my yard. I have even called the dog catcher, and the dogs seem to disappear before he arrives. lol our neighborhood has too many loose dogs, even though he have a leash law. I'm tired of it and want it dealt with!

I live in Semmes and I have called the animal shelter repeatedly about dogs loose in our neighborhood. If the dog is in the yard they will not pick them up...how about sticking around a bit? How about coming back by or patroling? If we want to walk in our neighborhood we have to carry big sticks and take a risk everytime we want to take our non-agressive dogs with us. This little girl paid the price for lazy govenerment! If the dogs had been picked up in the past and the owner fined, the situation might have been different.

These dogs need to be put down. I wouldn't give the court time enough to deem these dogs dangerous. I wouldn't even give them the ten day quarantine. Put them to sleep and have them tested for rabies. No child or person should have to endure that pain or the emotional and physical scars that this has caused. All dogs will bite, it's up to the owner to keep their dogs contained. This really pisses me off.

The Ambulance chasing trial lawyers are ecstatic and aroused by this incident. "Have you or one of your loved ones been attacked and mauled by a vicious dog lately"? "Let us help you get the settlement you deserve and in the process makes us richer at the same time". Call us now at 1-800-DOGS R BAD!

If it was my daughter, I'd be in jail this morning for either shooting the dogs, or beating the owner, or both. JMO

I have known this family for a long time and they are in my family's thoughts and prayers. We are praying for a quick and speedy recovery and the person that own these dogs are found quickly and is brought to justice. As far as i am concerned about the dogs, there shouldn't be no doubt that they deserve to be put down now that they have the taste of attacking someone in their mouths.
