FAIRHOPE, Ala. (WPMI) -- He was more than just a friendly face, more than a man in uniform. For Deputy Scott Ward, serving Baldwin county was not a job. It was his calling.
"He loved life, he never stood still, he was always wanting to help somebody," said Don Ming, who works near the scene where Ward was killed. Ming said he would see Ward nearly everyday. "He would often stop by the stores to check on us to see if we needed anything, just a wonderful man a wonderful family man."
Although they were not related, that family man was part of Linda Aney's family too, as are all members of law enforcement. "Like all the officers, we get to know them in this community over the years," Aney said, "Everyone is family in the area and whatever happens affects each and every one of us around here; even if we don't know them on a personal basis, we know them, it's part of our community."
When one member of that community hurts, they all hurt. Law enforcement personnel from across the country have flooded the Officer Down Memorial Page with sentiments of their own. One deputy from California wrote, "We may have never met, but you are a brother. May you rest in peace sir."
Funeral arrangements have been set for Tuesday, November 27th at 10:00 a.m. at the Fairhope Civic Center. Burial will take place at Fairhope Memory Gardens Cemetery. The wake will be held Monday, November 26th, 2012 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Wolfe-Bayview Funeral Home on Greeno Road in Fairhope.
