(MOBILE, Ala.) Nov. 12 - Many of you may be wondering how to make your next mortgage payment. Some have already fallen behind and are at risk of losing their home. There is some help out there, though. The Alabama Bar Association is now offering free advice.
When it rains it pours. No one knows that better than Judy Wells. Several months ago her bills started to pile up.
"Our electric was going up, and I had problems with that, then the gas so it. Everything all at once, all at once," said Wells.
Before she knew it, she was four months behind on her mortgage.
"It was just too late. I didn't have the money. So I had to let it go," said Wells.
"In Alabama you can be foreclosed on in a little over three weeks," said attorney Henry Callaway.
Callaway recently helped set up a free service that assists people who have fallen behind in their mortgage payments.
"The state bar hotline is going to put you in touch with a lawyer who will try and negotiate some resolution with a mortgage company, like lowering your interest rate or catching up your back payments, or stretching our your payments over time," said Callaway.
He says the most important thing is to act fast. Or you could be at risk of the bank seizing your home.
"We want to make sure people get enough legal protection that they can and stay in their homes," said Callaway.
The Consumer Credit Counseling Service will also negotiate on your behalf with mortgage companies. You can reach them at (251) 602 - 0011
