(MOBILE, Ala.) - Family, friends and fellow officers gathered to remember Officer Steven Green. A wake was held at Radney Funeral Home Tuesday night. Hundreds showed up to pay their respects to the fallen officer. He was stabbed to death Friday at Mobile Metro Jail after transporting a robbery suspect.

Green served two years on the force, all of it at the 5th Precinct in council member Gina Gregory's district.

"We got a letter from someone who talked about how he had stopped to help her when she had car trouble and they were talking about things and laughing and joking. He was a normal guy. He was doing his job, serving and protecting us and this awful thing happened to him," said Gregory.

Green's cousin Stephanie Wheat says from the time she can remember Green wanted to be an officer. She says he started listening to police scanners as a teenager and sometimes even hopped in his car and drove to the scene.

"He lived and loved being a police officer. He died how he would have wanted to protecting and serving his community," said Wheat.

Green leaves behind a wife and three children.
