MOBILE, Ala. (WPMI) A Carnival cruise ship floating in the Gulf of Mexico will be brought to Mobile.
Officials made the announcement Monday evening.
The Carnival Triumph departed on a four-day cruise from Galveston last Thursday. The ship experienced an engine room fire Sunday morning and has been floating in the Gulf since that time.
The ship's automatic fire extinguishing systems activated the fire and the fire was extinguished. Fortunately, no one was injured.
Monday evening, two tugboats arrived and tied up one of the ships. The second will be tied up sometime Tuesday morning.
Crews had originally planned to tow the ship to Progreso, Mexico, but the ship drifted about 90 miles north, putting it closer to Mobile.
The Triumph has maintained emergency generator power since the fire. Currently, public and cabin toilets are working in certain sections of the ship, power has been restored to a limited number of elevators and some power in the LIDO cabin is providing for hot coffee and limited hot food service.
Officials say all guests will receive a full refund, along with transportation expenses. In addition, they will receive a future cruise credit equal to the amount paid for the trip, as well as reimbursement of all shipboard purchases during the voyage.
