MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) An Alabama sheriff says officers stormed a bunker where a man was holding a child hostage last month because the man had told them something "real, real bad" was going to happen if they didn't meet his demands.

Dale County Sheriff Wally Olson said Thursday he couldn't reveal the demands of 65 year old Jimmy Lee Dykes. But he says there was no way to meet them.

Olson says officers knew Dykes had an explosive device in the bunker where he was holding a little boy, and it was big enough to kill someone if it went off.

Officers fatally shot Dykes and rescued the boy without the explosive device detonating.

Olson talked about the hostage situation while visiting the Legislature to discuss gun bills pending in the current session.
