When your home security system goes off, it sends an alert signal to your central monitoring station. The security company then notifies the appropriate parties which have been designated by you in advance. When you initiate a monitoring service, you designate whom you wish to be contacted in response to each possible alarm trigger. For example, if your fire or smoke alarm is triggered, you'd probably specify that the fire department be called, or if an intruder alert occurs, you can have the police respond. You can even have the company notify you when the alarm goes off. All of these contacts are determined in advance when you set up your system. If the police are notified in response to your alarm, they'll visit your home as an emergency call and investigate the situation. Any problems at your residence will be handled by the police. If it's a false alarm, the police will make a note that they were called unnecessarily. Too many of these types of calls could cause the police to ban you from future assistance. Different security companies can offer various options for responding to your alarm, so call one in your area for more specific information.
