Edema is an excess of extracellular fluid in your body tissues or cavities. It's similar to a tumor in that it results from abnormal, rapid generation of cells in the body. When cells reproduce very rapidly, they can cause severe problems. Because they multiply faster than they die, these new cells manifest themselves as masses of tissue. If these growths become very large, they will ultimately interfere with normal functions of the body. Compression and poor circulation are typical problems that result from edema. The larger the swelling from edema, the more serious the complications can be. If these growths are internal, they can become very large before you even know you have them. For more information about edema, contact a cancer specialist in your area.
