(MOBILE, Ala.) - When we think of sandbags, most of us on the Gulf Coast probably think hurricane supplies. But it turns out a similar kind of sandbag can also help you get an intense workout. Cindy Ross of Bodies By Cindy showed us how in this week's Workout Wednesday segment.

"What's so great about the sandbag is because the sand is moving around, you're engaging tiny little muscles that you normally wouldn't work," Ross said. "You can use the sandbag in place of anytime you would use a dumbbell or barbell."

The immense amount of trunk training that occurs with sandbag training is almost a good enough reason itself to use them. Trying to squat, run, lunge, jump, or any other movement while holding the sandbags in various positions challenges all of the trunk muscles.

Sandbags are an effective workout tool that you can make yourself. Ideal for the budget-conscious exerciser, sandbags are cheap to make and can be used in place of barbells for many exercises.

"You can go on Youtube and learn how to make your own at home," Ross said. "They're convenient, you can take them anywhere."

Who knew a simple bag of sand could help you break a sweat?
