(MOBILE, Ala.) - Wednesday, June 1st marks the beginning of the 2011 Atlantic hurricane season. The six-month season is predicted to be an active one: Federal forecasters say they expect three to six major
hurricanes this year.
No major hurricanes have made a U.S. landfall in five years, but forecasters warn that luck might not last. Local and federal emergency management officials are urging people in coastal areas to be prepared.
Your hurricane supply kit should contain enough non-perishable food for your entire family for seven days. You should have one gallon of water per person, per day. Make sure you also have a flashlight with batteries, a supply of regular prescriptions you use, a weather radio and extra cash on hand.
You are urged to develop a disaster plan for your family, evacuate if ordered and even make social media part of your hurricane awareness. This year, the Federal Emergency Management Agency is posting on Twitter and the National Hurricane Center has a Facebook page.
The team of weather experts at LOCAL 15 News, led by Chief Meteorologist Derek Beasley, will be closely tracking the tropics throughout the season. You can get prepared by watching a half-hour special from The Weather Authority tonight at 6:30 p.m. on LOCAL 15.
