(BIRMINGHAM, Ala.) Birmingham has long claimed to have the nation's oldest celebration of Veterans Day.

Now, the U.S. Senate agrees.

The Senate has passed a resolution stating that Birmingham is home to the nation's first and longest-running observance of Veterans Day.

The resolution comes nine years after the U.S. House of Representatives passed a resolution recognizing Emporia, Kan., as the "founding city" of the holiday.

Republican Sen. Jeff Sessions of Mobile issued a statement Tuesday after the Senate passed his resolution about Birmingham. He says it recognizes the city and the work of Birmingham native Raymond Weeks in honoring military veterans.

Reps. Spencer Bachus and Terri Sewell introduced an identical resolution for Birmingham in the House.

It's going to be a muggy Monday with highs in the upper 80s, but it's going to feel like we're in the low 90s. Dress light today and take frequent breaks in the shade.
