(MOBILE, Ala.) - Mobile Police have arrested a teenager and another woman Friday in connection with a shooting on Springhill Avenue earlier that morning.
17-year-old Romello Funches was out on bond for an October home invasion in Prichard, and wanted in connection with another robbery earlier this month at a Mobile apartment complex.
Funches faces two counts of robbery first degree and assault second degree. 27-year-old Christine McCarrol is charged with hindering prosecution first degree.
"He's clearly proven himself to be violent," Cpl. Christopher Levy said, "Robbery is always a violent crime."
Levy said tips from the public led robbery investigators to Funches, who was hiding at a Mobile apartment complex just hours after shooting a maintenance worker at the den of the Comrades Mardi Gras Krewe on Springhill Avenue. The victim was taken to USA Medical Center with non life-threatening injuries.
"We were able to take him into custody, actually, inside of the attic (of the apartment)," Levy said.
Levy said they arrested the tenant of the apartment too. Investigators said 27-year-old Christine McCarrol was communicating to Funches the movements of patrol officers at the scene.
"She's passing on these messages to the suspect about what the police are doing," Levy said, "That's extraordinarily dangerous, not only for the officers but for the other people that live in the complex."
Levy said Funches was charged in connection with an armed robbery eight days ago at the South of Dauphin Apartments. Investigators said Funches took money from the victim before telling him to leave, and even fired a shot at the victim. No injuries were reported.
"We are very fortunate to get this young man off of the streets," Police Chief Micheal T. Williams said, "We will not tolerate this type of behavior. We have top notch detectives in this city, and we're going to hunt these folks down and we're going to give them a new address; Mobile County Metro Jail."
