(MONTGOMERY, Ala.) - Several Republican legislators are working on a plan to lower the Legislature's compensation.

Senators Phil Williams and Bryan Taylor and Representative Mike Ball are writing a proposed constitutional amendment that would repeal the 61 percent increase the Legislature gave itself in 2007.

It would tie legislators' salaries to Alabama's median household income, and
legislators would get the same travel reimbursement as state employees.

Taylor said it would reduce the compensation for a basic legislative year from more than $52,000 to less than $44,000.

Williams said it's like merit pay. If the Legislature helps improve the economy and raise the household income, then lawmakers get more pay.

If the Legislature approves the plan, it will be on the November ballot for voter approval and will take effect in 2014 legislative elections.

The 61% pay raise the Democrats passed in 2007 was one of the main reasons a lot of them were defeated in 2010. Almost 100% of these vermins thought that the voters would forget what they did. Only a couple of Republicans voted for the raise that sky-rocketed their pay for a part-time job of 3 months. The lawmakers should repeal the raise and go back to what they were making in early 2007, no raise until the economy improves and then the raise for State lawmkaers should be the same as a cost of living based on private/public sector COL raises. Nothing over 3% each year when the economy improves. If the economy recedes they get no raise. No more secret voice votes for raises done late at night when they think nobody is watching.

A Constitutional Amendment? That is what's wrong with the Constitution now. How about a new Constitution? That is what we really need! By the way, according to the article, the bill would lower legislators base pay by $8,000 which is closer to 15.5% which is not the same as repealing the 61% increase!
