(MOBILE, Ala.) The Fix-A-Scratch pen claims it can erase your cars scratches with a quick swipe of the tip. The commercials make it look easy but for only $5, does it really work?
The makers of Fix-A-Scratch claim the pen fills, seals and repairs scratches on your car instantly. But is it too good to be true? "I cant believe that for $5 this pen is going to fix the paint on this car. It's just hard to believe," says LOCAL 15 sales manager Carey Golden. Golden let us try the so-called magic pen on her large, white SUV.
Driven by both herself and her 16 year old son Bishop, Golden says she can't afford to have a repair shop fix the scratches. "You know it will be thousands of dollars for a couple of scratches that are gonna be right back there as soon as Bishop takes the car back out again," Golden said.
Time to put it to the test. "So with the cap securely on, shake the pen to blend the solution," Golden said. Then it says activate the tip by pressing down on the hard surface. "Well, it's wet but theres no color coming up." That's because it comes out clear. "There's definitely liquid going on the top of the scratch but how is this possibly gonna turn white? How's it gonna know my car's white?"
The liquid is supposed to dry in direct sunlight and bond to your car's paint. A week later, we found some disappointing results. "I thought maybe it's gonna fill in the ridges and that kind of stuff but it didn't," Golden said. We asked if it's something she would recommend? She said no.
If you still want to give the fix a scratch pen a chance, you can pick one up for under $5 at any Dollar Store.
