Obesity is a growing problem (no pun intended). There are many theories about why and there are as many diets as there are people who are willing to write them down. Is the problem with our food or is the problem with our genetics? I contend that in order to survive scarcity we needed a healthy appetite so we would eat when food was available. Otherwise we would not last the periods of scarcity. In our country there is no scarcity.
In contrast to a comment made by a prominent researcher in the field of heart disease: "we are victims of our sloth and gluttony" I contend we are victims of our success.
To counter this I feel pharmaceuticals are a better answer than behavior therapy. Psychiatrists have excellent data to the effect that counseling without medicine is not as effective as medicine without counseling for many psychological problems.
