CoCoRaHS is a community based network that consists of volunteers all across the country (young and old) who enjoy weather and want to measure/keep track of precipitation (rain/hail/snow). CoCoRaHS is a weird word, but it's actually an acronym that stands for:
Community
Collaborative
Rain,
Hail, and
Snow
Network.
Volunteers with CoCoRaHS make it their duty to take precipitation measurements during each weather event. Those observations end up on the cocorahs.org website where anyone who is interested can have access to that information...from meteorologist, to those that do water research, to those that just have an interest in keeping track of precipition in their neighborhood or region. The more volunteers... the better coverage of precipitation data...the more valuable/accurate the info that's available to the public.
March is CoCoRaHS's "March Madness" contest. The purpose is for each state to gather as many volunteers as possible (within the state) during the month of March. It's a friendly competition between all 50 states, and the state with the most volunteers recruited during March will win the "CoCoRahS Cup." The concept is similar to that of the National Hockey League's "Stanlely Cup." The "CoCoRaHS Cup" will then travel throughout the winning state and be on display until next year's March Madness winners come claim it.
