2012 has been a quiet year for tornadoes. The average number of tornadoes in a given year for Alabama is around 40. Last year, we saw a record number of tornadoes..over 140 to be exact, due in part to two significant outbreaks on April 15th and April 27th. So far this year, we have only recorded 32 tornadoes. This is the lowest total since 1999.

We still have another month left in the year, and we are entering our secondary severe weather season. There is still a chance to raise the total for the year a bit, but it certainly will be nowhere near 2011 and likely finish at or below average.
